Top 5: Love Your Bookshop!

We’ve compiled a list of our top five indie bookstores (in alphabetical order, because we love them all equally). Let us know if we missed your favourite!

AVID READER
West End, Boundary St
This beautiful store is a Brisbane institution, with regular events with authors, literary salons and opportunities for emerging writers to read their work, not to mention their lovely staff who are always good for a book recommendation.

ARCHIVES FINE BOOKS
CBD, Charlotte St
Creaking floorboards and the musty smell of old books – if rare or unusual books are your thing, you’re probably already aware of Archives, situated next to Pancake Manor on Charlotte Street. Staff are happy to leave you to browse, but are very happy to help if you need something specific.

BENT BOOKS
West End, Boundary St
Just a hop, skip and a jump up the road from Avid Reader, Bent Books is impossible to miss with its brightly-coloured shopfront. Imagine those Brighton Beach box huts, but stacked full of all your favourite books at very reasonable prices. Heaven.

FOLIO BOOKS
CBD, Mary St
Open in Brisbane for almost 40 years, you know Folio is doing something very right. This corner store is a treasure trove of specialist titles, gorgeous coffee table books, and friendly, knowledgeable staff – I pass by it often on my walk from the city to university, and always find my neck craning backwards to see their everchanging window display.

PULP FICTION
CBD, Adelaide St
Upstairs in the Blocksidge & Ferguson Building Arcade is this little haven for sci-fi and fantasy lovers as well as fans of mystery and crime. A fantastic selection of classics (think Sherlock, Magician, Dune) as well as newer titles and authors. I’ve always found them to be great at stocking the whole series (no more hunting for the third book after a cliff-hanger ending to book 2…), but if it isn’t already there they are happy to order it in for you.
